"Measure With Physical Telemetry Before Sizing Mechanical Hardware"

FOUNDED 2017
MINNEAPOLIS, MN
PE LICENSE #54921

GreenAbility Decarbonization & Fluid Systems LLC was established in 2017 in the North Loop of Minneapolis with a singular technical conviction: the commercial HVAC and industrial fluid engineering sector is rife with rule-of-thumb over-sizing, uncalibrated equipment selections, and parasitic energy waste.

Too many consulting engineers simply copy legacy schedules of equipment from previous drawings, slapping a 30% safety factor on design head and another 25% safety factor on flow. The result is millions of kilowatt-hours squandered annually across throttled valves and oversized motors.

At GreenAbility, we bring laboratory-grade instrumentation directly to the plant floor. We clamp onto live pipes with ultrasonic transit-time sensors, log true three-phase power quality at motor control centers, and reconstruct thermodynamic balances from physical data.

Principal Engineer Profile: Dr. Aris Thorne, PE, CEM

Dr. Aris Thorne serves as Founder and Principal Mechanical Engineer of GreenAbility Decarbonization & Fluid Systems LLC. With more than 22 years of hands-on experience across district heating and cooling networks, commercial central plants, municipal wastewater pumping stations, and industrial cleanrooms, Dr. Thorne specializes in the applied fluid dynamics of variable-speed centrifugal pumping and heat-recovery thermal systems.

Dr. Thorne completed his doctorate at the University of Minnesota, where his dissertation focused on non-Newtonian boundary layer turbulence and cavitation inception in high-speed centrifugal impellers. Prior to founding GreenAbility in 2017, he served as Senior Thermal Plant Engineer for large regional district energy utilities and lead mechanical commissioning authority for acute-care hospital facilities throughout the Upper Midwest.

Our Field Instrumentation Arsenal

Unlike consulting firms that rely entirely on building management system (BMS) trend logs—which frequently suffer from uncalibrated thermistors and faulty flowmeters—GreenAbility deploys an independent, NIST-traceable testing instrumentation array:

Diagnostic Instrument Measurement Capability Field Engineering Application
FLEXIM FLUXUS F601 Ultrasonic Flowmeter Clamp-on transit-time acoustic measurement (±0.5% accuracy) Non-invasive GPM flow profiling on chilled water, heating water, and condenser pipes from 1/2" to 48" without drilling or shutdown.
Fluke 1738 Three-Phase Power Logger True-RMS volts, amps, kW, kVA, power factor, and harmonics (THD) Logging motor electrical input at Motor Control Centers (MCC) to evaluate true electrical load factor vs. nameplate brake horsepower.
FLIR T540 Radiometric Thermal Camera 464 × 348 pixel infrared sensor (±1°C sensitivity) Detecting thermal bridging in building envelopes, steam trap blow-through, and insulation failures on high-temperature hydronic piping.
UE Systems Ultraprobe 10000 Acoustic Meter Airborne ultrasound detection from 20 kHz to 100 kHz Pinpointing compressed air leaks in industrial facilities and assessing acoustic cavitation signatures inside centrifugal pump volutes.
Dwyer 471B Digital Thermo-Anemometers Pitot tube duct traverses and air velocity profiling Calibrating AHU supply air CFM, duct static pressures, and verifying Guideline 36 fan trim-and-respond sequences.

Our Decarbonization Philosophy

GreenAbility approaches every commercial building not as a collection of static manufacturer catalogs, but as a living thermodynamic network of mass flow, heat transfer, and mechanical work:

  1. Hydraulic Balance Before Motor Replacement: Before recommending a motor replacement, we ensure piping loops are balanced with pressure-independent control valves (PICVs), eliminating 3-way bypass waste and low ΔT syndrome.
  2. Electrification with Simultaneous Recovery: We champion the replacement of aging steam and gas boilers with 4-pipe heat-recovery chillers and cold-climate air-to-water heat pumps that recover condenser heat otherwise dumped into the sky.
  3. Bankable Measurement & Verification: Every kilowatt-hour and therm saved is documented under IPMVP Option B, ensuring full qualification for utility custom rebates and IRS Section 179D tax deductions.
